In addition to 40 gers, Three Camel Lodge’s main lodge was modeled after traditional Buddhist temples, adhering to strict Mongolian Buddhist canons of “soum style. ” The Lodge is tucked beside a rock outcrop bearing ancient petroglyphs, but it is the vast expanse of desert and the nighttime sky filled with a million twinkling stars that will leave a lasting imprint on your heart. Season:May through November RATES DAY 1YOL VALLEY NATIONAL PARK THREE CAMEL LODGE Arrive at Dalanzadgad airport where you will be met by your private guide and driver. Of all the world’s arid lands, the Gobi has the greatest air of mystery, perhaps because it lies at the heart of Asia’s remotest hinterland between the Siberian wilderness to the north and the Tibetan Plateau to the south. Contrary to the sameness that the word ‘desert’ suggests, the Gobi is a diverse and fascinating region, and includes sites of some of the most important paleontological discoveries of the 20th century. Explore the stunning landscapes of the Gobi, habitat for Bactrian camels, Argali Mountain sheep, goitered gazelle, Golden Eagles, Saker Falcons, jerboas (similar to kangaroo rats), and many endemic reptiles. Yol Valley National Park: From the airport head to Yol Valley (45 minute drive), nestled at the heart of Zuun Saikhan Mountain of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain range. This seven-mile valley is a lush landscape best known as a prime habitat for Yol vultures (lammergier), or bearded vultures. Lammergiers nestle atop the cliffs and when the air is warm, they fill the sky, soaring with the sun. Wonder why this valley is named for them? Simply look up, and the sheer number of vultures gliding through the sky will show you. The Yol Valley is a wondrous place where ice formed during the winter does not melt until late June. It is a place where pikas jump from bush to bush. These amazing little rodents are in the squirrel family and can only survive in elevations higher than 3,000 feet. Birds, from white ramped swifts to wall creepers, are plentiful in the Yol Valley, too. Visit the small, but informative museum to learn more about the local wildlife of the Gobi region before driving 10 km/ 6. 5 miles to the starting point for your hike. The narrow valley with a stream running through the center delivers a rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts. After exploring the valley, drive (1 hour) to the award winning Three Camel Lodge – your home away from home for four nights. The Lodge is located at Bulagtai Mountain on the edge of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. The lodge offers a wide variety of activities such as horseback riding, archery, nature walks, a library with interesting books on Mongolia, a screening room for watching documentary films about nomadic culture, learning traditional Mongolian games, or enjoying a relaxing massage. After lunch, reconvene with your guide in our Snow Leopard den for an informative session on the Gobi ecosystem, wildlife, fauna, geology and paleontology. Archery: In the evening, participate in an archery lesson. Learn to fire an arrow like a Mongol warrior. You will have the opportunity to compete after mastering your new skill. This interactive experience provides fun to every age group. The lodge offers actual replicas of the bow that were used hundreds of years ago by the Mongol warriors. Day 2Moltsog ElsSand Dunes Moltsog Els Dunes: After breakfast, drive to Moltsog Els, one of the few regions of the Gobi covered by sand dunes. Explore the dunes on foot, but don’t miss riding a Bactrian camel. It is not everyday that you’ll get the chance to get up close and personal with a two-humped camel. In fact, these wooly creatures are native to this region and are only found in Central Asia. Camel ride on the dunes are possible only if a local camel herding family is residing close to the dunes during the summer. (If camels are not available, we will explore the dunes on foot and ride camels in another location. )Bike Ride to a local nomadic family: Observing the vast Gobi by bicycle is a treat for travelers and allows you to experience nature you might otherwise miss. This afternoon head out on mountain bikes (helmets provided) for an easy to moderate, guided bike ride through the countryside to a home of a local nomadic family. Learn more about their way of life. If you wish, you may participate in their daily chores including herding and milking their animals, and learn how to prepare milk tea. You may also get the chance to learn the traditional games of the steppe, utilizing the ankle bones of sheep and goats. Mongolia is a home to one of the last remaining nomadic cultures in the world and often travelers compare Mongolia with traveling back in time to witness an old way of life that has not changed for centuries. About 30% of Mongolia’s population still lead a nomadic way of life and move from pasture to pasture, living in harmony with nature and off the land. Ger Building Activity at Three Camel Lodge: In the afternoon, experience ger building firsthand. Join locals to learn the process of raising a traditional Mongolian Ger. Participating in building and setting up a traditional Mongolian ger will have you feeling immersed in the local culture. Stargazing at Three Camel Lodge: After a delicious dinner at the lodge, take advantage of the dark Gobi skies (zero light pollution) and enjoy an evening of stargazing with your guide. DAY 3FLAMING CLIFFS Sunrise Walk: Wake up early to enjoy a relaxing walk at sunrise around the Bulagtai hillside, located behind the lodge. Here you will be able to see 8,000-year-old petroglyph and learn more about our unique Lodge. Cooking Class: Later in the morning, participate in a hands-on cooking class and learn to make some traditional Mongolian dishes. Here you will learn how to make Mongolian buuz (steamed dumplings) and khuushuur (deep fried meat pockets). Flaming Cliffs: In the afternoon, enjoy a documentary featuring Roy Chapman Andrews, the real-life Indiana Jones, whose expedition discovered the world’s first dinosaur eggs at the Gobi’s Flaming Cliffs, before driving out to the cliffs. Bayan Zag, commonly known as the Flaming Cliffs for the orange glow of its rock at dawn and dusk. It was here in 1923 that Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews and his exploration team from the American Museum of Natural History found the first nest of dinosaur eggs. It was, and remains, the only luxury eco-lodge in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. Built by and staffed by locals, Three Camel Lodge isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a state of mind. Season:May through November RATES DAY 1YOL VALLEY NATIONAL PARK Arrive at Dalanzadgad airport where you will be met by your private guide and driver. From the airport head to Yol Valley National Park (45 minutes), nestled at the heart of Zuun Saikhan Mountain of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain range. Birds, from white-rumped swifts to wall creepers, are plentiful in the Yol Valley, too. In the afternoon, reconvene with your guide in our Snow Leopard den for an informative session on the Gobi ecosystem, wildlife, fauna, geology and paleontology. (If camels are not available, we will explore the dunes on foot and ride camels in another location. )Ger Building Activity at Three Camel Lodge: In the afternoon, experience ger building firsthand. DAY 3HAVSGAIT PETROGLYPHS Sunrise Walk: Wake up early to enjoy a relaxing walk at sunrise around the Bulagtai hillside, located behind the lodge. Here you will be able to see 8,000-year-old petroglyph and learn more about our unique Lodge. Horse riding: After breakfast, enjoy horseback riding around the lodge. After a safety briefing and helmet fitting, riders are led around the area by our wrangler. More experienced riders should speak to their guide to arrange more challenging rides. Havsgait Petroglyphs: In the afternoon, drive to Havsgait Valley. Only 20 minutes from the lodge, Havsgait mountain provides a challenging hike up steep slopes, but the 30- to 45-minute hike rewards hikers for the climb—it’s home to one of the largest collections of rock carvings in the region. Catch your breath and spend time exploring the rock faces while enjoying unrivaled views of the Gobi to the north. Bulgan Soum (optional): You have the option of visiting Bulgan, a small town near a natural spring that has the only farms in the Gobi. Supplying local ger camps with fresh produce, a pefect example of local businesses being supported by ecotourism. Or head back to the lodge to enjoy its meditative setting or take is a spa treatment. DAY 4FLAMING CLIFFS Archery: After breakfast, participate in an archery lesson. Learn to fire an arrow like a Mongol warrior. You will have the opportunity to compete after mastering your new skill. This interactive experience provides fun to every age group. The lodge offers actual replicas of the bow that were used hundreds of years ago by the Mongol warriors. Bike Ride to a local nomadic family: Observing the vast Gobi by bicycle is a treat for travelers and allows you to experience nature you might otherwise miss. Although not obvious to the untrained eye, the Flaming Cliffs are rich with dinosaur fossils and have been the site of important paleontological discoveries. Whether exploring the must-see sites of the capital of Ulaanbaatar, camel trekking across seas of dunes, or discovering fossils at the iconic Flaming Cliffs—you will connect deeply with one of the wildest places on Earth. Staying in luxuriously appointed traditional gers and meeting eminently hospitable local people—you will come to know more than a place, but a timeless way of life. RATES Welcome to UlaanbaatarDays 1 & 2 Day 1 - Welcome to Ulaanbaatar The contrast between ancient traditions and a 21st-centurydemocracy is most visible in Ulaanbaatar, where traditional gersand Buddhist monasteries sit side by side with modern high-rises. Upon arrival at the airport you are welcomed by your privateguide and transferred to a centrally located hotel within walkingdistance of various museums and shops. Day 2 - Explore Ulaanbaatar Begin the day with a visit to Gandan Monastery, the seat of Buddhism in Mongolia. Woven through Mongolia’s nomadic culture is a rich Tibetan Buddhist tradition in which ancient shamanist practices are still evident. Although Buddhist monasteries were either destroyed or converted into museums during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, Gandan Monastery continued to operate as a showpiece for government officials. However, in spite of the government’s efforts to suppress Buddhism and other religious beliefs, Mongolia’s spirituality persisted and a significant resurgence of Buddhism began in 1990 when Mongolia became a democracy. Monasteries across the country are again opening their doors to worshippers, and the few lamas who survived the purges are training a new generation. Next, explore the National History Museum with a local Historian for an excellent overview of Mongolia’s history and culture. The newly remodeled museum displays traditional implements of daily nomadic life, including Stone and Bronze Age artifacts, historical costumes of Mongolia’s minority tribes, sacred religious relics, and agricultural, fishing, and hunting equipment. After lunch, visit Zanabazar Fine Arts Museum. Named in honor of Zanabazar, the renowned 17th century artist and politician, who was also the first Buddhist leader of Mongolia, the museum contains one of the best collections of Buddhist art and artifacts in the world, including many of Zanabazar’s original works. Enjoy a performance featuring traditional Mongolian dancers and khoomi throat singers followed by a welcome dinner at a fine local restaurant. GORKHI TERELJ NATIONAL PARKDays 3 & 4 Day 3 - Gorkhi Terelj National Park After breakfast, drive to nearby Gorkhi-Terelj National Park (2 hours). Comprised of the southern Khentii mountain range, this mountain, forest, steppe region provides habitat for a variety of bird and plant life. In the afternoon, embark on a hike towards the Aryabal Monastery. A hike up along a steep road, leads to a wooden suspended bridge called “The Bridge that leads to wisdom”. After crossing the bridge, you trek up 108 steps to finally arrive at the temple. Along the way, the path is lined with signboards displaying Buddha’s teachings. The monastery is special for its spectacular views of the surrounding valley. Day 4 - Return to Ulaanbaatar After breakfast, depart for Ulaanbaatar. En route, visit the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue in Tsonjin Boldog. The massive statue made of 250 tons of gleaming stainless steel will take your breath away. Once inside the two-story base of the statue, visitors can see a replica of Chinggis Khan’s legendary golden whip and also take an elevator to a deck on the horse’s head and marvel at the surrounding area overlooking the beautiful Mongolian steppes. Return to Ulaanbaatar and in the afternoon visit the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs to explore dinosaur fossils artifacts and some real paleontological gems. The museum displays openly mounted skeletons of original fossils and is truly a rare sight to behold. Continue on to the paleontology laboratory where you will join a paleontologist for a behind-the-scenes tour of a local laboratory and examine the latest batch of dinosaur fossils excavated from the field. GOBI / YOL VALLEY Day 5 Set off in the morning across the vast steppe to the Gobi (1. 5 hours). Contrary to the sameness that the word ‘desert’ suggests, the Gobi is a fascinating and diverse region, and includes the sites of some of the most important paleontological discoveries of the 20th century. Upon arrival, drive to Yol Valley National Park (45 minutes), cradled in the foothills of the Altai Mountains. An ancient river carved this surprisingly green valley, and its remnant streams create ice formations at the base of the valley that sometimes persist as late as July. A hike through the valley leads to the habitat of indigenous vulture-like Lammergeiers, Altai snowcocks, ibex, yaks, and Argali mountain sheep. After your exploration of Yol Valley, drive to the award winning Three Camel Lodge (1. 5 hours) located at Bulagtai Mountain on the edge of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. The lodge offers a wide variety of activities to travelers from archery, biking, nature walks, cooking class, reading a book on Mongolia to watching a documentary about nomadic culture, and from learning traditional Mongolian games to enjoying a relaxing massage. The Three Camel Lodge has partnered with The Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project to breed, train and place this native breed of dogs with qualified herder host families. Bankhar dogs play a critical role—safeguarding the livestock of Mongolian herding families from predator species such as snow leopards and wolves. Today we visit with one of the families who had adopted one of the Bankhar dogs. HAVTSGAIT VALLEY / MOLTSOG ELSDay 6 In the morning, drive to the Havtsgait Valley, site of ancient rock drawings left by early Gobi settlers for more than 5,000-7,000 years ago. Hundreds of petroglyphs adorn rocks scattered on the top of the mountain. In the late afternoon, drive to Moltsog Els, one of the few regions of the Gobi covered by sand dunes. Explore the sand dunes on foot or on back of a Bactrian camel. HORSEBACK RIDING / FLAMING CLIFFSDay 7 Spend the morning on horseback and explore the area surrounding the lodge. In the late afternoon, travel to the legendary "Flaming Cliffs" It was here, in 1922, that Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews and his exploration team from the American Museum of Natural History found the first nest of dinosaur eggs the world has ever seen. MONGOLIAN ART / FAREWELL DINNERDays 8 & 9 Day 8 - Return to Ulaanbaatar After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to Ulaanbaatar (1. 5 hours). Using ancient Buddhist temple construction methods, the unique property was painstakingly built to reflect traditional Mongolian culture, respect our pristine surroundings, and serve as an active community resource—all while providing a truly unparalleled guest experience. We follow the three pillars of sustainable tourism at Three Camel Lodge and within our community: Environmental Stewardship, Natural and Cultural Preservation, and Community Empowerment. Our unwavering commitment is guided by the United Nations Development Programme’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and each guest stay directly supports efforts to conserve our natural resources, protect our cultural traditions and improve the quality of life for Gobi residents. PILLARS of SustainabilityEnvironmental Stewardship Environmentally-friendly practices – ‘going green’ – is a globally-recognized concept that encourages innovative and sustainable practices that reduce, reuse and recycle, including energy, water, waste, and carbon. – We are proud to be the first lodge in Mongolia to successfully eliminate all single-use plastic water bottles, and we provide our guests with a stylish reusable metal bottle that can be refilled throughout the property at our purified water stations. Every day, we pursue our goal of becoming completely plastic-free. – In a region without formal recycling systems, we have developed our own comprehensive management program that diverts lodge waste from landfills – including paper, bottles and cans, and organic matter, which we compost onsite for re-use in our organic greenhouse. – Nearly 100% of the lodge lighting, including all the lighting in our guest gers, is solar-powered, and we use only LED lights. – We actively reduce our carbon footprint by sourcing over 50% of our lodge supplies, services and ingredients within 50 miles – supplemented by organic produce grown in our onsite greenhouse Learn more about nomadic expeditions SustainabilityCommunity Empowerment When tourism in Mongolia directly benefits local people by contributing to their economic and social well-being, they also become active partners in protecting nature, alleviating poverty, and celebrating cultural diversity. – From the beginning, we have remained deeply integrated with our Gobi community and continue to serve as a valuable resource in the region. Our onsite well provides water each day for thousands of animals belonging to nomadic herders; we also provide animal feed and grass during harsh winters. We sponsor English classes and sports teams in a nearby school, and in 2018 we brought a team of optometrists to give eye exams to community members, resulting in the distribution of over 1,000 eyeglasses. – Providing full-time employment and professional capacity building to local community members is fundamental to our company’s sustainability mission, and we are proud to employ a 100% Mongolian staff. By creating jobs in a remote region with limited opportunities, and investing in our employees through ongoing training, English lessons, and trips abroad to learn about global best practices, we strive to empower community members to become both hospitality professionals and stewards of their Gobi home. We currently employ 20+ staff year-round, in contrast to most Mongolian lodges, which only hire for the three-month tourism season. – We believe in the power of upward mobility opportunities and have a strong record in hiring, training and empowering our employees – women in particular – to achieve leadership roles within the company. Most of our department managers are women and many have worked their way up from entry-level positions, including our Head Chef, who started as a dishwasher seven years ago. – In order to support sustainable community supply chains and help grow the local economy, our purchasing and contracting policies favor local families, small Gobi businesses, and artisans selling locally-crafted goods. We also pay our taxes to the local province rather than the national government, which funds local development where it is most needed. - We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for the projects we support in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Please click here to see what supplies are needed for our project/projects. Discover More SustainabilityNatural & Cultural Preservation When tourism works to successfully protect Mongolia’s natural and cultural heritage, it also invests in safeguarding this legacy for future generations. – Past and present live as one in the Gobi, which is why we are committed to protecting the region’s priceless dinosaur fossils from illegal extraction in nearby paleontological sites, while supporting scientific inquiry. Forming a first-of-its-kind cooperative agreement with other local stakeholders and national park authorities, Three Camel Lodge serves as a base for research within the Gobi and regularly hosts international experts, including at the 4th annual Symposium on Asian Dinosaurs that was held onsite in 2019. The lodge also supports scientific excursions in the region to help further the field of Mongolian paleontology, and among other successes, one such excursion led to the discovery of a previously unknown species of ankylosaur – which was subsequently named Zaraapelta nomadis in 2014 in honor of our sister tour company, Nomadic Expeditions. Additionally, we actively support educational school programs that empower local students to become future stewards of the Gobi’s natural heritage, including a scholarship program in honor of a leading Mongolian paleontologist. – Since 2008, we have proudly supported local students studying traditional Mongolian music and dance at the Gobi’s Hanhongor School, and we regularly share their talents with our guests through private lodge performances. In addition to donating supplies and musical instruments to the school, in 2018 we sent ten students and two teachers to Ankara, Turkey to perform at the International Children’s Music Festival and share Mongolia’s cultural heritage on a global stage. In partnership with the Arts Council of Mongolia, we also launched a scholarship program in 2019 to fully sponsor five talented local students who wish to continue studying music and performing arts at the university level. – Rising from the arid steppe that stretches to the horizon in all directions, Three Camel Lodge was built to honor Mongolia’s nomadic heritage and reflect the Gobi’s distinct sense of place through traditional architecture and design, relying on local materials and guided by environmentally-friendly practices. The roof of the main lodge was built according to ancient Buddhist construction techniques, without nails, and our country’s cultural legacy is on full display throughout the property, from traditional horse head fiddles, artful tapestries and preserved onsite petroglyphs to our felt-covered guest gers decorated with traditional hand-carved furniture and intricately painted ceilings. Guests can shop for local artisan handicrafts in our gift shop and appreciate the Gobi way of life while watching herds of animals drinking from our outdoor watering hole, accompanied by their nomadic owners. Plan your adventure PRESERVATIONRESTORING the native Bankhar One of the newest sustainability initiatives we are most proud of is helping to launch and sustain the Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project—a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help preserve the Bankhar, a unique mastiff breed native to the Mongolian Steppe. Bankhar dogs have traditionally performed a critical role—safeguarding the livestock of Mongolian herding families from predator species such as snow leopards and wolves. The Bankhar Dog Project breeds, trains and places Bankhar dogs with qualified herder host families. The presence of the dogs serves to ward off these threats, thus reducing the use of shooting, trapping or poison—protecting not only herds and endangered species but also a traditional way of life. Three Camel Lodge’s founder, Jalsa Urubshurow, has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Bruce Elfstrom, director of the nonprofit. “I’ve known Bruce and his work for over a decade,” says Jalsa Urubshurow, “and what he is doing to reintroduce the breed and protect snow leopards is nothing short of heroic. Three Camel Lodge has been longtime supporters, but in 2015 we got involved firsthand knowledge when we adopted Barbus. ”The male Barbus has since been joined by female Ganuba, and their first litter was gifted to local nomadic herding families in Spring of 2021. The Bankhar Dog Project has been steadily reintroducing the breed since 2011. The dog was nearly lost forever during 70 years of Communist occupation. Because the naturally strong and brave Bankhar was seen as a powerful cultural symbol, Russian forces purposely sought to eradicate the animal. Only a few scattered pockets of the breed survived. Previous Next Of the Same Spirit We have helped construct a Bankhar dog—also known as Mongolian mastiff—kennel for breeding and training. @THREECAMELLODGE --- > Three Camel Lodge offers luxury accommodations in Mongolia's Gobi Desert, complete with authentic cultural experiences, adventure tours, and sustainable tourism. - Published: 2020-10-07 - Modified: 2023-05-03 - URL: https://www.threecamellodge.com/the-lodge/ Welcome to The Lodge Welcome to The Lodge Welcome to The Lodge THREE CAMEL LODGEThe Centerof Far Nestled in the heart of the Omnogobi Aimag, the lodge is tucked beside an outcrop bearing ancient petroglyphs. The land bears Stone Age artwork and remnants of structures far older than recorded time. Herodotus, considered the ‘Father of History,’ wrote descriptions of the Scythian race (approx. 600 B. C. to 300 A. D. ), which lived a nomadic horseback existence, in the Central Asian region near the Black and Caspian seas. Legend has it that during a great meeting of diverse steppe and forest tribes in the Khan Kentii Mountains in 1206, a man from poor nomadic origins was proclaimed Chinggis Khan, ruler of the Great Mongolian Nation. This man and his descendants would dominate half the world for the next few centuries, eventually commingling the arts and culture of other nations with their own, including Yuan Dynasty-era China. This empire is verified by Marco Polo—among other historians, explorers and traders—who recorded his extensive stay among the Mongolian people between 1274 and 1291 A. D. , experiencing firsthand the largest contiguous empire in human history. Monuments to historic deeds, mysterious stone carvings and the metropolitan ruins of once-venerable empires dot the vast expanse of Mongolia, allowing our guests to connect with the legacy of the Great Khans and the timeless beauty of centuries of dynasties. The nomadic traditions continue to this day, and those who explore our country find themselves as enveloped in the landscape and its lessons as those legendary Turkic-Mongol tribes who originated the land. Discover more Previous Next mongolia's Natural Treasures Mongolia’s vast countryside is widely inhabited by nomadic herders who consider their native landscape sacred. This ‘last wilderness nation’ entered the 21st century with its heritage largely intact, and it remains one of the most sparsely populated countries on Earth. From dress to values to religion to customs to festivities to music and craftsmanship—the Mongol nomadic ways have shaped the customs of the people and remain essential today—evident in the artistry that courses through everyday life in a land of unimaginable splendor. It is said that only in wide-open spaces do we have true vision. The vast otherworldly beauty of the Mongolia is one of Earth’s greatest treasures, and the magnificence of the land of Chinggis Khan remains largely as it began thousands of years ago. The core of the conifer forest far to the north of Mongolia conceals the cleanest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Hovsgol, christened the Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia. Eighty-five miles long and over 800 feet deep, it is a great rift lake and holds more than 1% of the world’s fresh water. Oceanic grasslands carpet the summer in swaths of yellow cinquefoil, pink primrose and blue iris extending south of the mountains to the far east, across the Russian and Chinese borders, forming the largest continuous steppe in the world—10 times the size of the Serengeti. In the lowermost region of Mongolia’s expanse, past the vast plains, there lies the immense region of desert—the Gobi. It is a name that summons rightful images of the remote, the exotic, and the formidable. The scale of the Gobi’s landscape is indeed breathtaking, yet first-time visitors may be surprised at the variety of its beauty. The towering sand dunes of Hongoryn Els, the craggy juniper-clad peaks of the Gobian Altai, the saxaul ‘forests,’ colorful desert flora and bird-filled lakes, the red sandstone spires of the Flaming Cliffs—all equally enchanting. Mongolia is also home to some of the most spectacular wildlife on earth. Elk are common in the northern forests. Mountain regions throughout the country harbor healthy populations of Argali, the largest of the world’s bighorn sheep, as well as Ibex, the agile mountain goat. And throughout the country one can find Gazelle, the Wild Bactrian Camel, the Gobi Bear, raptors such as the Golden, and the Takhi, the last remaining wild horse in the world. It’s a state of mind. Once asked why he climbed Mt. Everest, adventurer George Mallory quipped, “because it’s there. ” The reason for creating Three Camel Lodge was precisely because of what wasn’t. Jalsa Urubshurow, CEO of Nomadic Expeditions and founder of Three Camel Lodge, had been sharing the undisturbed beauty of Mongolia with travelers since the country reopened in 1990, yet he was unable to find desirable accommodations for his guests. After careful consideration for the preservation of the region’s environment, culture and people, he opened Three Camel Lodge in 2002. It was, and remains, the only luxury ecolodge in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. Our unique constellation of gers rests in the heart of the starkly beautiful Gobi Desert. These 40 traditional felt and canvas tents used by Mongolian nomads are modeled after traditional Buddhist temples, adhering to strict Mongolian Buddhist canons of “soum style. ”Built by and staffed by locals, Three Camel Lodge isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a state of mind. A founding member of the Beyond Green partnership of sustainable resorts, the ecolodge stands among the most distinguished collection of hotels, lodges, inns and resorts located in extraordinary places—offering exclusive and unique experiences and sharing the utmost dedication to high-quality service and sustainable tourism practices. Discover Your Adventure FOUNDER & CEOJalsa Urubshurow A pioneer in environmental conservation through for-profit sustainable tourism initiatives, Jalsa Urubshurow’s story began in 1952 when his parents immigrated to the US after a seemingly endless search for safe haven from Stalinist persecution in Russia. Born on the other side of the world from his ancestral heritage, Jalsa grew up speaking Mongolian and listening to the legends his father recited to him. One year after the establishment of his framing business, Nomad Framing, Mongolia transitioned to democracy and Jalsa’s dream of visiting his father’s homeland became a reality. During his first exploration of Mongolia’s astounding beauty, the nation’s first democratically elected Prime Minister, His Excellency Dash Byambasuren, recruited him to advise on expanding accessibility to Western travelers. Jalsa eagerly took up the challenge, and Nomadic Expeditions became a full-fledged operation in 1992. In almost the three decades since its inauguration, Nomadic Expeditions has developed into the premier tour operator for the region and a strong force within the sustainable tourism sector. The company has replicated Mr. Urubshurow’s experiences exploring Mongolia’s ecology and culture for thousands of adventurers, including custom expeditions for the American Museum of Natural History, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Tibet House, the Nature Conservancy and World Wildlife Fund, as well as university groups such as Harvard and Stanford. Mr. Urubshurow is recognized as the “World’s Top Travel Specialist” for Mongolia by Condé Nast Traveler and he is also on the “WOW” List by WendyPerrin. com for several consecutive years. He also serves on the board for The Arts Council of Mongolia, The Peregrine Fund, and The Captain Planet Foundation and continues to support numerous charities and nonprofits around the world. How can I reach the lodge? To most swiftly reach Three Camel Lodge, there is a local airstrip about 10 minutes from the lodge for clients chartering helicopters or private planes. However, most guests arrive at the lodge via a 1. 5-hour in-country flight from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, to Dalanzadgad, on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Once there, you will drive another 1 hour by Land Cruiser or other 4×4 vehicle—truly an off-the-beaten-path adventure. All vehicles are provided to clients by Three Camel Lodge. We can arrange your flights and meet you at the airport. 02. What does the lodge rate include? The lodge rate encompasses a complete package like an all-inclusive resort. Rate Inclusions:All meals and beverages (except alcoholic drinks)All lodge-based activities (excluding customized excursions)Scheduled excursionsRoundtrip airport transfers between the Lodge and Dalanzadgad airportBottled/purified water throughout your stayEntrance fees to National ParksExtensive Pre-Departure Reading and Travel Guide 03. If I do not want excursions, is there a room-only price? No, the excursions and activities are optional and the price doesn’t change. 04. What is there to do? The Excursions and Lodge Activities will fill your days with exploration. The quietude of the boundless natural environment also lends itself to perhaps the greatest luxury of Three Camel Lodge—the peace in which to focus and reconnect. Our Spa offers wonderful restorative treatments. And guests frequently tell us their favorite experience was reading a book on the lodge porch while observing the passing animals who are heading to the lodge well for water or seeing incredible sunsets and sunrises. 05. How do I book a room? Book online or please send us a brief message of interest, and one of our Expedition Specialists will contact you within 48 hours to discuss a stay. We find that this personal attention helps travelers fully understand the scale of what we offer, and allows us to create a more customized journey at no additional cost to you. Hospitality is simply a significant part of our culture. 06. When is the best time to visit Three Camel Lodge? Mongolia is busiest during the July month and many clients prefer the less busy months of June and August or September. 07. What is the recommended length of stay? A minimum stay of two nights is required. To truly appreciate the destination, we recommend a stay of three to four nights with excursions to see the region’s one-of-a-kind treasures. 09. What are the room bathrooms like? All gers at Three Camel Lodge have en suite bathroom facilities including toilets and heated showers. The bathrooms have been crafted using locally sourced materials by local craftsmen. 10. Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions? Absolutely. Hospitality is our calling. We can accommodate a wide variety of dietary requirements including vegetarian & vegan, Kosher and Halal, and specific food allergies. Please let your Expedition Specialist know if you have any dietary needs in advance and we will be happy to plan accordingly. 11. Will I have cellular and internet access? There is Wi-Fi access available in the common areas of the lodge which can be used for emails or WhatsApp messages. Please note this is a remote area and the service can be unreliable at times. Reliable Internet access is available at the nearest town of Dalanzadgad (1 hour drive). 12. Is there an electrical outlet in my ger? Yes. There are electrical outlets in each ger and electricity runs 24/7 should you wish to charge your phone, camera batteries, etc. Electrical power in Mongolia is 220V, 50Hz. Plugs require a two-pin socket with round pins. Most adapter/converter kits will have the necessary configuration, but a 220-volt surge suppresser is recommended for sensitive electronics. 13. Do you have suggested itineraries? We do indeed have suggested itineraries for your stay in the Gobi. The team at our sister company Nomadic Expeditions is also happy to assist in planning journeys for other parts of Mongolia and Asia as well. 14. How many people can stay in a ger? Maximum occupancy is 2 adults per ger plus one child under the age of 12. 15. Is there laundry available at the lodge? We do offer laundry at the lodge. 16. Is it safe? In our country of 3. 17 million people we have minimal cases of COVID. While the world must of course take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we in Mongolia due in part to our natural seclusion have been blessedly spared any real outbreak. Crime in Mongolia involving tourists is very rare. We experience zero crime in our remote location in the Gobi and advise basic precautions to deter potential pickpockets at the airport in the capitol city. 17. What should I wear? We recommend warm hats, gloves and jackets together with layers as temperatures can fluctuate during the day from Spring to Fall. 18. Is Mongolia in China? No, Mongolia is an independent country in East Asia, bordering Russia to the north and China to the south. China has a province called “Inner Mongolia” which is sometimes confused and is not part of Mongolia. 19. How many languages are spoken by your staff? While most communication is in English, we can provide guides able to converse in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and Korean. --- --- ## Posts > Discover the enduring legacy of Mongolia’s unique horse breeds—from the resilient Steppe Horse to the wild Takhi. The world’s oldest field sport, it began on the great steppes of Asia, flourishing under the khans of Mongolia, who practiced the art between military campaigns for sport and to capture food. The nomadic Mongolian’s hunting practice has always used female golden eagles—which can reach 15 lbs with a wingspan of 7 ft 8 in—to set after quarry and use their talons and diving speed of up to 200 miles per hour to snatch up or take down such animals as hares and foxes. Females are used to hunt as reverse sexual dimorphism—found across almost all of the raptors—finds females up to 37% larger than males, thereby more powerful in their attack, as well as less likely to be injured by retaliating prey.
