Cultivating the Next Generation of Mongolian Artists
For generations, Mongolia’s music and dance have been passed from teacher to student, preserving stories, traditions, and a deep connection to place. In the South Gobi, the Khankhongor Arts School provides young people with the opportunity to learn these traditions close to home, ensuring they remain a living part of community life.
Since 2008, Three Camel Lodge and Nomadic Expeditions have partnered with the school to support students through performances, educational resources, scholarships, and cultural exchange. Together, we are helping create opportunities for young artists while ensuring Mongolia’s living traditions continue to be practiced by future generations.
Investing in OpportunityÂ
Strong cultural traditions depend on long-term investment. Over the past fifteen years, our partnership with the Khankhongor Arts School has grown from hosting student performances at the Lodge to supporting musical instruments, educational resources, and scholarships that enable talented students to continue their studies at the university level.
Developed in partnership with the Arts Council of Mongolia, the scholarship program helps remove financial barriers while allowing students to remain connected to the communities where their artistic journeys began. By supporting education at every stage, the partnership creates pathways for young artists to build professional careers while carrying Mongolia’s cultural heritage forward.
From the Gobi to the World
Uuganbayar’s journey reflects what sustained investment in education can achieve.
Growing up in Khankhongor, he discovered the morin khuur, Mongolia’s iconic horsehead fiddle, at the local arts school. Scholarship support enabled him to continue his studies at the Mongolian University of Arts and Culture, where he graduated in 2024.
During his studies, he founded Agmat, a band rooted in traditional Mongolian music. Today, the group performs internationally, introducing audiences in Poland, Thailand, Vietnam, and South Korea to Mongolia’s rich musical heritage while demonstrating how local education can create opportunities with global reach.
Why it Matters
When students have access to quality arts education, experienced teachers, and opportunities to continue their training, traditional music and dance remain part of everyday life rather than becoming memories of the past.
A Living Tradition at Three Camel Lodge
Throughout the season, guests at Three Camel Lodge have the opportunity to experience performances by students from the Khankhongor Arts School.
